Mini NYC

First adventures — more like experiments — in tilt-shift photography.

People person

4 Jun

Arriving at Financier Pâtisserie for morning pain au chocolat, I found myself in line behind an elderly Russian woman.  At the time there was only one associate manning the counter, and combined with this woman’s dire need for perfect, unbroken pastries, they proceeded to take ten minutes of my life.  In the meantime, a few other customers arrived.  One, a Wall-Streeter who stood by, when a second associate stepped in behind the counter and started, “Sir, what can I get for you?”
He physically relocated and cut in front: “Excuse me.”
I loudly muttered under my breath: “Damn right, excuse you.”
He turned and looked quizzically: “Sorry?”
“You heard me.  I was here well before you.”
“I didn’t think you understood [the associate].”
I rolled my eyes and used fingers to mark points: “Okay first, you’re insulting my intelligence.  Second, you’re telling me I wouldn’t understand [the associate], why, ’cause I’m Asian?  You weren’t even respectful enough to mention, ‘Oh, she was here before me.'”
Completely baffled, to the associate: “I’m sorry, she was here before me.”
Damn right.

Sprinkles, the May 7th sneak peek

14 May

Last Saturday I attended the sneak peek event for Sprinkles Cupcakes (which officially opened yesterday, by the way), and let’s just say I was very thankful for sending in my RSVP; there was a long line down Lexington, and even those who arrived and were on the guestlist had to wait about half an hour to enter the store.
Once inside, the colorful and playful decor only slightly distracted me from the main attraction: the cupcake display window!  Behind a sheet of glass, wooden shelves were filled with columns and rows of cupcakes — honestly, it reminded me so much of Swirlz Cupcakes in Chicago, I had some high hopes.
I was also super fortunate to meet Sprinkles founder, cupcake-whisperer Candace Nelson.  In fact, I hardly noticed her standing in the corner as everyone clamored around the order counter.  I may have acted like a kid in a candy store (young adult in a cupcake store, same difference) but she was a real sweetheart.  I sampled the strawberry, peanut butter chocolate, cinnamon sugar, and banana cupcakes, tastefully rich and moist but the frostings killed me — too sweet and dense, with the exception of cinnamon sugar, which was coated with cinnamon sugar instead of frosting.  And when I left, I had another four in tow: vanilla, red velvet, black and white, and coconut.  What, they were complimentary!

Sachin + Babi Part II addendum

6 Mar

And I quote, “I just wanted to follow up on you coming into the office one day…Sachin and Babi want you to ‘hang’ with them for the afternoon and see how all of the magic happens here in our studio.”  Very cool.

Sachin + Babi Part II

5 Mar

Thursday night was a huge success — again, many thanks to Neiman Marcus’s PR.  Meeting these two was a rather entertaining experience.  Designers as well as partners in the industry, they are quite the dynamic married couple; one of the night’s funnier moments, Sachin returned from a long absence exclaiming, “See, she always insists, ‘No, no, you should sit down for a few minutes,’ and look, I end up with an oxygen facial.”
It was great discussing their inspiration, ideas, and use of textiles — beautiful patterns reminiscent of old world India paired with novelty and unique textures, which give a modern, lush feel to their work.  As models showcased the SS 2011 lookbook I saw this very admirable consistency in quality.  And when the night came to a close, I left with a resort dress courtesy of their Midtown studio and an invitation to Lincoln Center this fall — oh yes!

With love, Henri

Invitations from department stores are fabulous love letters; department stores want you to want them, and the feeling’s mutual.  In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, I am sharing love from M. Henri Bendel who is giving 25% off “anything your heart desires” from February 10-14th.  In-store, you present the postcard, which you receive only if you are on the store’s mailing list.  However online…simply enter the code CRUSH.  Enjoy!
